Augusta preparing for final pass for debris pickup

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Debris trucks are taking away storm damage that’s been around since September, and the city is working to finish the job before the deadline for 100 percent FEMA reimbursement.

“February 4th is going to be the deadline we are starting. Hopefully we’ll be finished or at least  substantially complete by then,” said Steve Cassell, Augusta Debris Manager.
Three months of work has noticeably reduced the number of debris piles, so much so, now the city’s debris manager is announcing the timetable for the final neighborhood pickups.
“Final pass in some of the areas probably start in District One and District Seven and subsequently move down. What we’re going to do is make announcements based on voter precincts,” said Cassell.
The plan is to start the final passes middle of next week, though some city leaders feel that’s jumping the gun.
“Because right now I’m still sending in roads where the first pickup hasn’t even passed. Yesterday, I sent in another road,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne Guilfoyle.

With the city preparing for the final pass, residents are advised to get any remaining storm damage in place for pickup because that will be it.

“We’ll have a truck picking up and there will be a supervisor there to certify it’s complete. Take pictures, mark it, not coming back,” said Cassell.

The end is in sight for Augusta’s debris pickup, even though some say it still doesn’t look that way.
