Tampa's West Riverwalk project: Is it worth the price tag?

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa is moving forward with a $56 million expansion of the Tampa Riverwalk.

On Thursday, Community Redevelopment Board Members approved allocating another $10 million toward the West Riverwalk project.

Imagine having the Tampa Riverwalk on the other side of the Hillsborough River.

Some West Tampa residents are all for it.

“The West Riverwalk multimodal network project is a multi-generational, once in a lifetime, game changer opportunity that will help transform West Tampa,” Jeanette Fenton said.

Others say the money should go toward something else.

“We don’t need no connection, no sidewalk there right now,” Valerie Bullock explained. “That should not be a pressing issue.”

“I always say the City of Tampa moves like the little engine that could unless someone wants something real **** bad,” Stephanie Poynor said.

Expanding the Riverwalk would connect different neighborhoods and bring new safety features, like bike lanes, to make the city safer for cyclists and pedestrians

But it comes with a hefty the price tag.

CRA Board Member Bill Carlson said there are more pressing matters that need money.

“Why are we doing something just so we can add it to a video in two years to say look at what we all accomplished?” Carlson said. “I’d rather be able to tell the public what we accomplished was getting your roads paved and protected your houses from being flooded.”

Board Member Charlie Miranda, on the other hand, said there are things more important than money.

“It’s the last link to have neighborhoods in West Tampa and Tampa Heights that they can see and feel something and not get left out,” he said. “There’s a value in certain things in life that money can’t buy.”

“That’s hope [and] disparity,” he continued. “You don’t want to get out, leave and you want to have the opportunity to do what someone else is doing.”
