EATONVILLE, Fla. – Volunteers from two nonprofits are teaming up on a project to transform homes in Eatonville.

On Friday, Rebuilding Together Central Florida collaborated with HELP CDC to significantly improve the living conditions and safety for two homeowners.

The homes, which were built in the late 1960s, required critical repairs to address longstanding structural, safety, and habitability issues.

Lois Billy, who has lived in Eatonville for 37 years, is one of the homeowners selected for the project.

“I think it’s fantastic. It makes me feel so much gratitude” Billy said. “There was some deterioration. After time, we all have to have work done on our home.”

Rebuilding Together Central Florida’s team focused on essential upgrades, including roof replacements, window repairs, kitchen and bathroom renovations, air conditioning unit replacements, and electrical outlet upgrades.

Jose Garcia, CEO of Rebuilding Together Central Florida, highlighted the broader mission of the organization.

“Our mission is not just about repairing homes; it’s about rebuilding lives,” Garcia said. “This project in Eatonville exemplifies how we can address both the physical and emotional well-being of homeowners while strengthening the bonds within the community.”

The project is funded by HELP CDC, whose commitment to community development within Eatonville is making the vital improvements possible. Eatonville holds historical significance as the first self-governing all-Black municipality in the United States. HELP CDC and their community partners are dedicated to preserving the livability of Eatonville’s aging homes and maintaining the vibrancy of this unique community.

Nicole Oriol, executive director of HELP CDC, emphasized the importance of community investment.

“At HELP CDC, we believe that investing in our communities is essential to building a better future for everyone,” Oriol said. “We are proud to partner with Rebuilding Together Central Florida to bring meaningful improvements to the lives of Eatonville residents.”
