BAY LAKE, Fla. – At 5 o’clock nightly, just within the park entrance of Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World guests and cast members stand at attention for one of Disney’s longest traditions where they honor a veteran of the day.

Not only was a recent Flag Retreat an honor for U.S. Army Col. William “Bill” Connelly, it added a little extra magic to his 100th birthday.

“It really is an honor,” said Bill. “You make a guy feel good—that’s the best way I can describe it—all of you.”

According to the Disney Parks Blog, Connelly served during World War II in the 115th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. Drafted at 18, he completed high school with the Army’s support, attended college, and participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).

He earned his bachelor’s degree and was later commissioned as an Army officer.

Bill was active in both the European and Pacific theaters, including the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Over his 27-year military career, he primarily worked with the Counterintelligence Corps and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone.

The Flag Retreat has been ongoing since 1971 and even dates back to 1955 in Disneyland to thank a veteran for their service.
