Prince William, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton), and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are almost always seen smiling and looking very polished whenever the cameras capture them.

Some fans have pointed out that not only do they look camera-ready when they’re seen out and about but sometimes they wear the same hues or coordinating ensembles. This was the case when the family was last seen together in 2024 as they made their annual walk from the Sandringham House to St. Mary Magdalene Church for the Christmas morning service.

Now, an expert is revealing that the parents’ and children’s coordination was intentional for a certain reason.

Why Prince William, Kate, and their kids wore matching clothes during outing

As The Sun noted, Kate donned a hunter-green Alexander McQueen coat with a tartan scarf, and her three children and Prince William kept in line with that theme. Prince George and Prince Louis’ suit ties featured a Tartan pattern. And the Prince of Wales’ tie was coordinated perfectly with Princess Charlotte’s navy tartan jacket.

Fashion expert Amber Graafland shared the reason why the royals opted to match their outfits.

She told Fabulous: “When Kate, Prince William, and their children wear coordinated outfits it’s about more than just looking good. By complementing each other, and sticking to a color theme, they are showcasing a united front. It’s a technique Prince William and Princess Kate use to show how in tune they are when they attend official engagements together, and they also deploy it with their children. 

“Adept at using their clothing to convey coded messages, the Waleses know that by presenting a refined and harmonious image they convey a close-knit family with a strong bond. It also makes them instantly recognizable on the world stage.”

Other royals matched to prove another point

But it wasn’t just the Wales family matching, Kate also sported the same color as her stepmother-in-law, Queen Camilla.

It’s thought that was deliberately done to debunk what Meghan Markle said a few years back about the family protocol when it came to wearing the same shades as other royals at the same time.

During a confessional in episode three of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries, the Duchess of Sussex said: “To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same color as Her Majesty if there’s a group event. But then you also should never be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family.”

Since the release of that documentary, several royals have made it a point to don the same colors during joint outings such as the 2024 Christmas walk where Kate and Camilla both donned hunter green. And for the family’s annual walk in 2022, the Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice both rocked dark green jackets as they made their way to Christmas morning mass. Moreover, Prince Edward and Sophie’s daughter, Lady Louise, opted to wear the same color blue coat as Queen Camilla that day.
