LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Video obtained by affiliate KLAS Wednesday shows a Las Vegas police officer discovering a woman’s body in a freezer, leading to her ex-roommate’s arrest.

A Clark County grand jury indicted Daniel Roush, 37, on murder and other charges in the death of Monique Gilbertson, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported Friday. Las Vegas Metro police arrested Roush on Nov. 6. A woman police identified as Roush’s wife, Gina Lopez, faces drug charges in connection with the event.

Gilbertson met Roush, who identifies as Jazzlynn Roush, at a store and invited him to live with her, police said after his arrest. Around Oct. 22, Gilbertson kicked Roush out of the house and changed the locks.

On Nov. 6, police officers conducted a welfare check at Gilbertson’s home in the 5500 block of Tres Piedras Road, near Nellis Boulevard and Vegas Valley Drive. The person who called police said they were worried as they had not heard from Gilbertson for two weeks.

Body camera video from one officer who responded to the welfare check shows police arriving to the home with a locksmith to gain entry. Roush then enters the door, saying he has “rights” to the property.

“She’s not here right now,” Roush repeatedly tells the officers. “Monique’s not here right now.”

After 15 minutes, Roush lets police into the house. Police search the home, finding a locked freezer in a utility room. The freezer was covered with clothing, immediately drawing the officers’ attention.

The locksmith who helped the officer attempt to access the home before Roush answered the door and then unlocks the freezer. An officer then removes a tarp inside the freezer, revealing Gilbertson’s body, the video shows.

“There’s a person in here, go get him in handcuffs,” the officer says.

Gilbertson was “folded up” in the freezer and appeared to have been “frozen for some time,” Clark County Deputy District Attorney James said. Investigators suspect Gilbertson met Roush in September and offered him a temporary place to live.

Messages from Gilbertson to Roush indicate Gilbertson wanted Roush to leave: “Good luck to you. I just can’t live with anybody, I’m so sorry,” one said, according to grand jury transcripts. “I helped you for way longer than I thought I would so just think of it as a gift. So, you have to find another person.”

Gilbertson had 400 nanograms of fentanyl per millimeter in her system at the time of her death – 200 times the amount that could kill a person, Puccinelli said. Investigators suspect she died around Oct. 22.

Roush initially faced second-degree murder charges in Las Vegas Justice Court. The indictment means the case will now bypass justice court and move to district court. Lopez is a co-defendant in the criminal case but not does face a murder charge.
