THE heartbroken family of a five-year-old boy who died after being crushed by a parking meter have told how he “brought so much joy”.

Sammy was rushed to hospital after he was hit by the structure in the courtyard of a museum in Bunbury, Australia.

He died on Friday after suffering critical injuries two days earlier on January 15.

Sammy’s devastated family have hailed his “cheeky, playful nature” in an emotional tribute.

They said: “We are so grateful for the support that we have received from family, friends and the general public.

“We would also like to acknowledge the support from the staff at the museum, first responders and the care given to Sammy at the BRH (Bunbury Regional Hospital) and PCH (Perth Children’s Hospital), which was so loving and respectful.

“Sammy impacted everyone he met.

“He was wise beyond his years and brought so much joy with his cheeky, playful nature.”

Sammy was on an environmental education school holiday programme when he was struck by the parking meter.

Paramedics treated Sammy at the scene in the courtyard of Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre before he was airlifted to Perth Children’s Hospital.

He died two days later from his injuries.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy and the museum has been closed since last Wednesday.

It is not due to reopen for another week.

Well-wishers have donated more than $22,000 AUD ( £11,000) to a fundraiser for Sammy’s family.

The GoFundMe page reads: “The unimaginable has become this family’s reality as they navigate a journey filled with uncertainty and overwhelming challenges.

“This tragedy has deeply impacted those who know and love this family, as well as the hospital staff, colleagues, friends, and community members who have been involved.

“No family should have to face such heartbreak while also worrying about financial burdens.”
