JOHNSTON, SC. ()- A family is Edgefield County is in shock after losing their home to a fire Wednesday evening.
Cheyenne Lacey says she and her 4 kids spend part of their Wednesday playing in the snow during a short break on an E-Learning Day.
They came back inside to finish their schoolwork, but all of a sudden, their fire alarm went off.
One of Lacey’s sons saw the fire from his bedroom after finishing his homework, and that’s when the chaos began.
“He was back in his room, and I heard the fire alarm going off, but I didn’t realize that’s what it was at first—I thought it was him doing something,” said Lacey. “Then, he ran up the hallway and said ‘there’s a fire in the laundry room!”
They went to the laundry room to find a piece of furniture engulfed in flames, but they’re still not sure what caused it.
The family rushed out of the home to safety—some standing in the snow with no shoes on.
Lacey’s 4 children range in age between 1 and 11 years old.
Lacey says thankfully no one was harmed, but it’s a mixture of emotions.
“Very overwhelmed—in a good way and a bad way. Overwhelmed because we’ve lost a lot, but also overwhelmed about the generosity of everybody in the community. There’s a lot of people reaching out to help, and it’s very nice,” said Lacey.
The Lacey family goes to Victory Baptist Church in North Augusta.
Lead Pastor C.T. Townsend says he first got word through a men’s ministry at the church.
“We have a ministry here called ‘Better Man’, where we teach men here how to be better fathers, husbands, and leaders in the church. I was at my house last night, and a text message was sent across that whole group—-and instantaneously, those men took action,” said Townsend.
A GoFundMe page has been set up, and church members are starting to collect food, clothes, and other essential items for the family.
“Our church now is collecting gift cards, because our church is taking care of making sure they get clothes. So gift cards, a GoFundMe page, and all these different things, just trying to help them anyway that we can,” Townsend said.
“A family that’s devastated like this with a fire—they’re entire life goes up in flames. It’s a blessing as a pastor to see the men of our church that know them personally run to the scene, even before the systems of our church could get involved,” Townsend added.
Lee Anthony is in a bible study group with Cheyenne’s husband, Milton—and a friend of his for the past three years.
“A group of guys in the bible study group, we’re all pitching in, trying to do what we can. We know the church is as well and some others in the congregation—so he’s got a large family that he can lean on and depend on,” said Anthony.
