CHATHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — A school district in Sangamon County put out a statement on Friday regarding the recent hazing and bullying allegations involving a show choir group.

Earlier this week, the Ball-Chatham School District (BCSD5) received a complaint alleging multiple incidents of hazing and bullying within the Titan Fever/T-FUNK show choir at Glenwood High School. In response, the district immediately launched an investigation which is currently ongoing.

“These allegations are being taken very seriously, as BCSD5 does not tolerate bullying or hazing in any form,” part of the statement reads. “As a district, we are committed to adhering to state and federal laws, as well as district policies, which require maintaining confidentiality and protecting student privacy.”

The district also said they are not sharing names, details or any information that could identify those involved at this time.

In a meeting with parents on Jan. 23, Dr. Becca Lamon informed families that all show choir activities would be suspended until the investigation is complete for the safety of the students.

Practices and the remainder of the season are expected to resume as soon as possible following the investigation. The statement also included that official updates will be shared no later than Jan. 27 regarding when the season will resume. At no time has it been announced that the show choir season had been cancelled.

As a response to the allegations, Glenwood High School is implementing a school-wide training on bullying and hazing for all of its students. They are also hosting small group sessions with every athletic and extracurricular team. The district has started planning for these events.

“BCSD5 stands firmly against all forms of bullying, harassment, and violence. We encourage students, parents, and community members to promptly report any suspected misconduct to school administrators,” the statement said. “Together, we can maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.”
