Recently retired AFL champ Hugh Greenwood is looking to score a property win after moving to Queensland and a new coaching gig with the Gold Coast Suns.

The 36-year-old has put his five-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Melbourne’s Gowanbrae up for auction with a price guide of $1,380,000 – $1,500,000.

Located in leafy surrounds 13km from the CBD the sprawling one level pad is scheduled to go under the hammer on March 1.

The previous owners had done extensive renovations to the 700 square metre block, reported the Herald Sun on Friday.

Highlights include a paved undercover patio and a separate BBQ area.

Featuring a thoughtful open plan layout, there’s a lavish dining space and amazing gourmet kitchen featuring stone bench tops and breakfast bench.

The main bathroom, meanwhile, boasts a luxurious free standing tub.

Design features include high ceilings and a private living area.

The super-size main bedroom hosts a high en suite and walk in wardrobes.

The house was the main residence for Hugh’s family and wife Kjiersten Straub-Greenwood just before they made the shift to the Gold Coast.

Standing a strapping 191cm tall, the Tasmania-born Hugh first made headlines after moving to the US in 2011 to build a promising basketball career.

He played college ball with New Mexico until 2015 when he left the US to return Down Under after signing up with the Perth Wildcats.

However, in a dramatic move, the talented athlete dumped the position for a chance to start in the AFL.

He joined Adelaide Football Club and played with the side between 2016 and 2019.

After playing with the Gold Cast Suns between 2020 and 2021, the strong mid fielder finished his career with North Melbourne.

Hugh left the club and hung up his boots at the end of 2024 after signing on with the Roos in 2022.

He touched his fans when started wearing the number one guernsey when playing with North Melbourne in tribute to his late mother who died of breast cancer in 2017.

His mum’s passing inspired Hugh to take on the ambassador role for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in 2018.

In 2015, Hugh performed his first slam-dunk in years playing for New Mexico against the University of Nevada (UNLV).

The college basketballer said he was motivated to score a whopping 22 points – thought to be close to a career best – after seeing the troll make foul cancer jokes prior to the game. 

‘There’s a line and it gets crossed,’ he said courtside. ‘I was motivated tonight.’

‘I got my first dunk since my freshman year and I credit him for getting us a win tonight because that’s what motivated me.’

Australia’s official basketball association congratulated him on a ‘great game’.

‘Australia is right behind you and your family,’ Basketball Australia tweeted.

Hugh, who was at the time in his senior year at university, had become a key player in the New Mexico Lobos side.

The athlete left home when he was 14 to live at the Australian Institute of Sport.

He played 121 games of first class footy in his career.

Hugh shares two children, Titus and Tahj, with his wife Kjiersten.
