Tim McGraw Exits Netflix Bull Riding Drama Series Due To Surgery

Tim McGraw will no longer be headlining the rodeo drama series for Netflix. This decision comes after he was initially set to star in and executive produce the show, as announced during Netflix’s upfront presentation in May.

According to Deadline, a source close to McGraw says the actor and musician is recovering from orthopedic surgery on both knees, performed in August following a tour-related injury. Now, with a new back surgery on the horizon requiring significant recovery time, McGraw has decided to step back from the physically demanding role.

The series, set in the high-stakes world of bull riding, revolves around a champion rider (originally played by McGraw) at a life-changing crossroads. His world is turned upside down by a fearless young competitor who challenges his beliefs and uncovers buried secrets, forcing him to confront his past.

With McGraw stepping down, the production can proceed after the role has been recast. However, the future of the series—produced by Skydance Television and McGraw’s Skydance-backed Down Home—is uncertain.

Rumors of recasting are circulating, but Netflix and Skydance have declined to comment.

Created and written by Brandon Camp, who was set to co-showrun alongside Taylor Elmore, the drama remains in development. Most recently, McGraw appeared in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1883.
