ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — Elizabethton Parks and Recreation hosted the sixth LEGO: Think Outside the Blocks event on Saturday.

In celebration of National LEGO Day, builders of all ages and skill levels gathered at the Elizabethton Recreation Center on Saturday for creative challenges, timed competitions and more.

Emma Massick, Elizabethton Parks and Recreation programs and special events coordinator, said that she and her colleagues had enjoyed LEGOs since childhood. They decided to revisit this childhood interest as adults by creating the event.

“I know a lot of the staff at [Elizabethton Parks and Recreation] has a big love for LEGOs,” she said. “We’ve played with LEGOs since we were kids that just on through adulthood. So [we] just want[ed] to bring that to the community. LEGOs, bring everyone together.”

LEGO enthusiasts shared tips, showcased their creations and connected with fellow building block fans. Challenges included building something that began with a letter chosen by the announcer, constructing a model using only one color and creating replicas of landmarks in Elizabethton.

“It’s really special,” Massick said. “I think it’s great to see the community come together, especially after the hard times we’ve been having. It’s nice to see everyone just come out, enjoy some creative play, and just really bring everyone together.”
