A shootout in a Stone Oak apartment complex in San Antonio, Texas, left several officers injured and the shooter dead.

NBC News reported that on Wednesday, the San Antonio Police Department received a 911 call just before 8:30 p.m. for a “suicide in progress.” Soon after the first call, a second call came in reporting shots being fired at an apartment complex located in the 18700 block of Stone Oak Parkway.

When the officers arrived on the scene, a female exited the apartment stating that the suspect was shooting inside and that he was coming out, according to the police statement.

Police said that Brandon Scott Poulos, 46, exited the apartment and opened fire on the responding officers, striking one officer in the leg.

Six more officers were injured by either gunfire or shrapnel while trying to approach Poulos. None of the officers sustained life-threatening injuries and were either treated at the scene or taken to a local hospital, according to News4SA.

When SWAT arrived, Poulos had barricaded himself in the apartment. After several hours of negotiation, law enforcement was able to gain entry into the apartment, where they found Poulos dead from multiple gunshot wounds, KSAT reported.

Poulos served in the Navy for 10 years. He was recently released from jail and was out on bond when the shooting occurred.

Poulos was arrested on January 18 for one count of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, two counts of injury to an elderly person with intent to cause bodily injury, and one count of driving while intoxicated (second offense), according to KSAT.

Poulos’s bond totaled $35,000. He was given “no contact” orders and was ordered not to possess or use firearms. Poulos was also ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.
