Marcus Arbery tells First Coast News Jackie Johnson needs to be held accountable for her actions.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Jury selection continued Tuesday for the former Brunswick district attorney Jackie Johnson who was accused of obstruction and interfering with the investigation of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.

Johnson was the county’s top prosecutor in 2020 when Arbery was killed. The 25-year-old Black man was fatally shot on Feb. 23, 2020, as he ran from armed white men in a pickup truck who wrongly suspected Arbery was a thief. Greg McMichael, who initiated the deadly chase, was a retired investigator for Johnson’s office. His son, Travis McMichael, killed Arbery with a shotgun.

Prosecutors for state Attorney General Chris Carr’s office say Johnson used her position to protect Greg McMichael and to urge police not to arrest Travis McMichael.

Johnson said she recused herself from handling the case because of McMichael’s involvement, but the state argues she hindered the investigation and a grand jury indicted her three years ago.

The jury is expected to be selected by Tuesday morning. Marcus Arbery says this jury selection is the next step to Johnson being held accountable for her actions.

“She tried to cover it up and that’s why it doesn’t affect our family it affects all American people,” Arbery said.

The judge informed the court today that 12 jurors will be selected for this case by Tuesday morning. The trial is expected to take two and half weeks.
