Former Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) moved a step closer to becoming the next Transportation secretary as the Senate voted unanimously to tee up a final vote to confirm him.

Senators voted 97-0 to invoke cloture on Duffy’s nomination.

Duffy is expected to be among President Trump’s nominees to receive widespread support on both sides of the aisle. His support on the Senate Commerce Committee was an indication of this, as it approved his nomination in a 28-0 vote.

“At the end of the day, I am confident that Sean is the right person for this job in this coming, upcoming administration,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) recently said to introduce Duffy before the panel for his confirmation hearing.

“I believe he will help deliver for Wisconsin families, businesses, and workers, and I expect that he will work through this committee and both sides of the aisle to improve our infrastructure and address the challenges that arise in the years ahead,” she said, adding that she was “proud” to introduce him to the committee.

Duffy served nearly five terms in the House representing northern Wisconsin, resigning in 2019 to help care for a newborn daughter with health challenges.

He has since lobbied in Washington and was a frequent presence on Fox News, where his wife has been a host in recent years.

Duffy has said that he plans to focus on aviation and highway safety during his tenure, but Democrats still have questions despite their support. Headlining those surround the Trump administration’s push to roll back the promotion of electric vehicles.
