AUGUSTA, Ga. () – The City of Augusta announced it will hold a official naming ceremony for the Augusta Riverwalk in honor of Former Mayor Edward M. McIntyre, Sr. on Friday, Jan. 31.

The event is set to take place at noon on the Riverwalk Amphitheater and is open to the public to attend. The ceremony is expected to include remarks from local dignitaries, community leaders and members of McIntyre’s family, according to a press release sent from the city on Tuesday. A commemorative plaque will also be unveiled.

McIntyre, Augusta’s first Black mayor, is often credited for his contributions to the formation of the Riverwalk.

“Under his leadership, the concept and development of the Augusta Riverwalk came to fruition,
transforming the Savannah Riverfront into a vibrant and cherished community space,” a statement from the city reads. “This tribute recognizes his pivotal role in shaping the Riverwalk and his enduring legacy of service, dedication, and visionary leadership for the city of Augusta.”

McIntyre served as mayor of Augusta from 1981 to 1983.
