CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Just five days after a deadly shooting in Coles County, State Police have released video from the incident.

On Jan. 25 shortly after 1 a.m., Charleston Police responded to a gas station located at the 200 block of W Lincoln Ave. to conduct a well-being check on 22-year-old Yahacov Dennis of County Club Hills.

State Police said in a release Thursday morning that while talking with officers, Dennis grabbed one of their guns and then shot himself. EMS responded to provide aid before Dennis was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day.

Since the incident, State Police have continued to investigate. Thursday morning, they released body camera footage from one of the officers as well as video from a police vehicle that was parked at the gas station.

State Police warn that the footage, released on the State Police YouTube channel, is graphic and that viewers should use discretion.

They added that Dennis’ family was given the opportunity to review the video before its public release.

State Police and the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office are continuing to investigate.

This is a developing story.
