WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – An American Airlines jet with at least 60 passengers and four crew members aboard collided Wednesday with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C. Three soldiers were on board the helicopter. Officials say at least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River. Crews searched for other casualties but did not believe there were any other survivors.

Lawmakers from Kansas have taken to social media to share information and offer their thoughts and prayers:

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu

“Just received a call from an American Airlines spokesperson who confirmed that there was an incident involving the flight from Wichita, Kansas to Washington, DC. No additional information at this time but they will keep me informed with the latest,” said Wu. “Please pray for all involved.”

Wichita Vice Mayor and City Councilman J.V. Johnston

“All Wichitans may know someone aboard the plane crashing into the Potomac River. It’s a sheer tragedy; all people here are going to know someone on that flight, a family member, a coworker, a friend of a friend; it’s going to be a tough time for a lot of Wichitans ahead,” said Johnston.

Wichita City Councilman Brandon Johnson

“I am praying for the passengers and crew members of American Airlines Flight #5342 and the members aboard the military aircraft. This is a heartbreaking situation and I praying for the best possible outcome of this incident. Godspeed the first responders working to save lives in our nation’s capital and please keep the families of those who were aboard both aircraft in your prayers,” said Johnson. “If you believe you may have loved ones on board flight 5342, call American Airlines toll free at 800-679-8215. Anyone calling from outside the U.S. can visit news.aa.com for additional phone numbers. Family members in Canada, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virginia Islands can call 800-679-8215.”

I have been in constant communication with federal, state, and local officials overnight and want to thank the over 300 first responders from across the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for their response efforts. I will issue a flag order today to acknowledge this devastating event and tragic loss of lives.”

President Donald Trump

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”

A plane, traveling to the Nation’s capital from Wichita, KS carrying roughly 60 passengers collided with a Military helicopter. My prayer is that God wraps his arms around each and every victim and that he continues to be with their families,” said Marshall. “There are no words that can make telling this story any easier. I ask the world to join me in praying for Kansas this evening, the first responders, rescue crews, and all those involved in this horrific accident. I have been in contact with local and national authorities asking for answers and will continue to demand more information on how this unfolded.”
