THE QUESTION

Is there a Lay’s potato chip recall?

THE SOURCES

THE ANSWER

This is true.

Yes, there is a Lay’s potato chip recall.

WHAT WE FOUND

Packages of Lay’s potato chips sold in two states were recalled after it was found some products may contain milk as an undisclosed ingredient.

Back in December, Frito-Lay issued a recall on 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, warning that customers with “an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product.”

The recalled bags of chips were sent to retail stores and online distributors in both Oregon and Washington and could be found on shelves as early as Nov. 3, 2024. Recalled chips have a “guaranteed fresh” date of Feb. 11, 2025 and manufacturing code 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration escalated the recall to a Class I categorization. This is used in “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” the FDA explains.

“This is not a new recall or a change to what was previously announced,” a Frito-Lay spokesperson told VERIFY in response to the FDA’s escalation.

“The recall was executed in December in full cooperation with the FDA when the issue was identified. The recall was limited to two states, and recalled product has been removed from the marketplace,” they added.

Milk is considered a major food allergen by the FDA and symptoms of an allergic reaction could include: hives, mouth tingling, vomiting, coughing, wheezing, or swelling of the face, tongue, lip or throat. Serious allergic reactions can lead to anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening.

As of Jan 30., there have been no reported allergic reactions related to the recalled product. Customers who have the recalled chips are instructed to throw out the product, and they can contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 for more information.
