'We're going to hurt': Kiowa couple among those killed in DC crash

KIOWA, Kan. (KSNW) — As authorities begin their investigation into the deadly crash between a U.S. Army helicopter and an American Airlines flight from Wichita gets underway, we’re learning more about the 67 people who lost their lives Wednesday night.

Two of the victims on that flight were Bob and Lori Schrock of Kiowa, Kansas, a town about 90 miles southwest of Wichita.

The couple was reportedly flying to Washington, D.C., and would later take a train to see their daughter, Ellie, who is attending college in Philadelphia a trip they took often.

Bob and Lori are being remembered for their outpouring of generosity, always leaning on faith while lending a hand to seemingly everyone in their community in Kiowa and beyond. That comes from Bob’s longtime friend, Michael Simpson.

Simpson said that he had just shared a text with Bob recently thanking him for his generosity in donating time and money to their ministry ranch just outside of Kiowa. The ministry is a Christian alternative to foster care. Simpson was trying to get it up and running but did not have the money to fund it. Bob stepped in to help with everything so his friend could focus on being there for the young men who needed guidance.

“‘Love and respect and appreciate both of you very much.’ All they said was, ‘Lori and I are blessed to know you and look forward to catching up when we get home.’ That was our relationship, a good man, good family,” he said.

Simpson believes he doesn’t run into too many people kinder than the Schrock family.

“You ain’t got to worry about your pasture; you go work with the boys; I’m going to make your pasture look like a golf course, kept it sprayed and sprayed in new grass, and kept it sprayed and taken care of for years,” he said.

Simpson said he heard of the crash last night and immediately got a feeling he knew someone on board. He called a mutual friend this morning to learn they did not make it left to now grieve the loss of a best friend. Simpson said that his grief turns to pain, knowing the couple leaves behind Ellie, who is now left to finish college and navigate her early twenties without her parents.

“Biggest heartbreak that we’ve been both praying about is their daughter because I can’t imagine how lonely that is going to feel. For me, for Mark, we’re going to hurt; it’s going to be painful, but we know we’re going to see our friends again,” he said.

Ellie is a student at Villanova University. One of her best friends, Grace Cantrell, said that Ellie’s parents were like a second set to her and waking up to the news was paralyzing.

“Unreal feeling of numbness,” she said.

Mourning for moments the Schrock’s will now miss out on.

“All the things that her parents won’t be there for, her wedding, her first boyfriend, her first kid, she’s planning on going to med school. If she becomes a doctor, they won’t get to see her achieve that,” said Cantrell.

Those who love Bob and Lori want them to be remembered as generous people of belief and would want others to know they are at peace.

“If there was one message that Bob wants ringing through this world after he’s gone, is put your faith in Christ,” said Simpson.

affiliate KSNW is told that Ellie has family surrounding her with support on the East Coast.
