Political parties explain Hillsborough County’s conservative flip

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – As of Thursday, Hillsborough County records showed the number of active registered Republicans was bigger than the number of registered Democrats. The difference as of Friday was 307 voters.

Carmen Edmonds is the chair of the Hillsborough GOP. She said new residents and younger voters helped her party flip the county from blue to red.

“The influx of conservatives moving to Florida and Tampa is a big hot spot,” Edmonds said. “They want conservative values, as far as being fiscally responsible, but they also like parts of the libertarian mindset.”

The libertarian mindset involves advocating for a smaller government and individual responsibility, along with tolerating diverse lifestyles.

Edmonds also credits Gov. Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump.

Rep. Kathy Castor, whose district includes a bulk of Hillsborough County discussed why support for her party may be waning.

“There has definitely been a Trump effect,” Castor said.

The United States representative agreed President Trump helped sway voters and said her party’s messaging is being clouded by other headlines.

“Democrats have lowered the cost of prescription drugs, (are) fighting to lower the cost of living, standing up to utility companies to lower their electric bills and not playing these culture war issues,” Castor said.

The Florida Democratic Party said there are more than 100,000 inactive registered voters in Hillsborough County. Numbers show about 43,000 are Democrats. The party said if you add those numbers to the active list, then Democrats will be back in the lead.

Inactive voters are people whose election related mail cannot be delivered for unknown reasons, or the voter has moved and has not updated their address. Keep in mind, inactive voters can still legally vote.

A spokesperson for the Florida Democratic Party released the following statement:

“Republicans are taking premature victory laps to distract from their civil war. The truth is Republicans have spent years changing elections laws to wipe Democrats off the rolls and make it harder to register to vote. While they may have a slight edge today, we’re going to continue fighting to take back Hillsborough County.”

Evan Power, who is the chairman of the Florida GOP, also released a statement:

“Congratulations to the Republican leaders and volunteers of Hillsborough County! Your work has been nothing short of impressive. President Trump’s Golden Age is upon us, and Florida voters are showing support for his initiatives by registering as Republicans, rejecting the great harm Democrats have inflicted upon our great nation.”

The Florida GOP expects Miami-Dade to be the next county to flip.
