Manny Machado makes blunt assessment of Padres offseason: 'Disappointed'

It seems that Manny Machado is not impressed with the Padres offseason so far.

When asked by reporters on Saturday about the moves that the Padres have made in this free agency, Machado responded with a somewhat gloomy attitude.

“Are we disappointed we haven’t made any moves? Yeah,” Machado said. “As a team you look up there and you are a little disappointed that we let some of the guys that were a part of our core group here go elsewhere.”

“At the end of the day we can’t control that,” he added. “We can control with the group of guys we have here and we are going to get ready for a long season.”

The all-star third baseman’s comments come just days after the team saw shortstop Ha-Seong Kim and utility player Jurickson Profar sign with different teams for the upcoming season.

“I’m beyond happy for him [Profar],” Machado said. “He did unbelievable for our organization this year, and lifted us big time.”

Profar saw his first all star appearance with the Padres in 2024, batting .280 with 24 home runs, along with winning a Silver Slugger award.

As for free agency pickups, the Padres remain far behind their respective NL West competitors, lacking any major signings or trades this offseason.

In comparison, the division-rival Dodgers have made multiple big-name signings to further improve their 2024 World Series championship roster, including Japanese star Roki Sasaki.

The Padres were a part of the Sakaki sweepstakes, being one of the final three teams before the 25-year-old decided to sign with Los Angeles.

Machado told reporters, however, that he believes Sasaki knew where he was going to sign the entire time.

The Dodgers also signed two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell to a five-year deal in November, along with picking up relievers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates in January.
