Police said the incident appeared to be a “tragic accident,” but the investigation will continue to determine the official cause of the child’s death.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A missing child with special needs was found unresponsive in a retention pond on the city’s Westside Saturday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police say around 2 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Dennard Avenue regarding a missing child with special needs. Officers searched the area for the missing child. A short time later, the child was found in a nearby retention pond, unresponsive.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene but was unable to revive the child, police said.

JSO detectives with the Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

Police said the incident appeared to be a “tragic accident,” but the investigation will continue to determine the official cause of the child’s death.

At the time, the death is pending classification. Police are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families on the investigation.
