FORT STEWART, Ga. — The identities of two soldiers who died during a vehicle accident in the Fort Stewart training area on Thursday have now been identified.

The United States Army 3rd Infantry Division said that the two soldiers were SSG Shelbe Butner and SPC Jacob Mullen.

SSG Butner was 28 years old and was a Missouri native who served in the Army for nine years. Her awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Assault Badge and the Drill Sergeant Badge.

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, the 3rd Infantry Division commanding general, said that Butner and Mullen were honored Soldiers of the Marne Division and sent thoughts and prayers to their families and fellow soldiers.

“Our hearts are broken at this devastating loss,” Maj. Gen. Norrie said.

Officials said that both soldiers were dedicated motor transport operators serving with distinction in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.
