17 years later, Lane Bryant killings remain unsolved

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (WGN) Sunday marked 17 years since a shooting at Lane Bryant that left five women dead rocked south suburban Tinley Park in Illinois. As time has gone on, the storefront has changed, and the reward for information leading to an arrest has increased over $100,000 but the killings remain unsolved.

Here is where the case stands today:

Day of the crime

On Feb. 2, 2008, the Tinley Park Police Department (TPPD) said a man posing as a delivery driver at the Lane Bryant located in the Brookside Marketplace on West 191st Street pulled a gun on a half-dozen women and forced them into a back room, where he shot and killed five of them.

The five women killed were Carrie Chiuso, 33, of Frankfort; Connie Woolfolk, 37, of Flossmoor; Sarah Szafranski, 22, of Oak Forest; Rhoda McFarland, 42, of Joliet; and Jennifer Bishop, 34, of South Bend, Indiana.

Sketch of the suspect

A sixth woman and store employee was also shot during the incident. She went on to survive her injuries, and TPPD said the Illinois State Police worked closely with her to develop a 3D sketch of the potential suspect.

Police say the suspect is a man around 6 feet to 6-feet-2-inches tall, with a husky build and broad shoulders. He was 25 to 39 years old at the time of the shooting.

In addition to a sketch of the suspect, an audio recording of his voice from the 911 call, a wanted poster and reward information are available on Tinley Park’s government website.

If you have any information, TPPD ask that you contact them immediately at 708-444-5300.

Reward

This time last year, community members and activists gathered to raise money and increase the reward in hopes it would renew interest in solving the case.

Already standing at $100,000, an extra $3,000 was added to the pot.

“It’s amazing (that with) the amount of money out there, there’s been no movement,” attorney Domingo Vargas said in front of the business at the time, which is now a TJ Maxx.
