Trump to discuss tariffs with Canada and Mexico

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is expected to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a Mexican official later Monday, after imposing tariffs on imports from those countries. Many Republicans say these tariffs are necessary, but Democrats say this only hurts Americans and their wallets.

Canada and Mexico are some of the U.S.’s biggest trading partners and Americans could see higher prices soon unless something changes.

“We put tariffs on. They owe us a lot of money, and I’m sure they’re going to pay,” said Trump.

Canada and Mexico responded forcefully by vowing to impose retaliatory tariffs. Canada’s tariffs are slated to take effect on Tuesday.

“If President Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us,” said Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

President Trump said Americans could feel the pain from these tariffs. Florida Republican Congressman Byron Donalds told NewsNation this is necessary to send a message to other countries.

“The risks are worth it. And the reason is because with respect to China and Mexico in particular, there is a massive amount of fentanyl coming into the United States and killing our people.,” said Donalds.

Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer bashed this move by the president, calling it a Trump Super Bowl tax.

“A lot of people at the Super Bowl have beer and guac. All of it comes from next. Much of it comes from Mexico. And the prices of these things are likely to go up,” said Schumer.

Trump also suggested he could impose tariffs on the European Union, and potentially the United Kingdom, after he has threatened to do so if they don’t purchase large quantities of American oil and gas to make up for its growing deficit with the U.S.
