ARTHUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Village of Arthur is making sure the Amish community is taken care of.

This year they’ll be working on buggy lanes for a smoother ride. The Village President, Rod Randall, said every three to four years they’ll fix the side of the street.

It’s because the horse’s metal hoof covers damage the surface of the road and with hundreds of people traveling back and forth, it ends up creating a safety issue.

“Wherever the buggies go, you’re going to have a rut or a trough that’s eventually going to be made in that asphalt from the horse’s hooves,” Randall said.

He said construction will start sometime this spring and only take a couple of days to fix. The project is estimated to cost $100,000. It’ll come from their motor fuel tax budget.
