HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says a woman was arrested last week after her children were found living in a “severely neglected environment.”

MCSO said on Jan. 28, Tanea Angel Mills, 24, was charged with two counts of torture/willful abuse of a child after two children were found living in a hazardous apartment.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to an eviction notice at an apartment on the 300 block of Old Gurley Road. While there, authorities said deputies found two children, aged one and two years old respectively, living in what they described as heavily neglected conditions.

According to MCSO, the children were left unattended, with the apartment having feces on the walls and an excessive amount of garbage. The Alabama Department of Human Resources took the children into its care and had them taken to Huntsville Hospital for evaluation.

The investigators later identified Mills as the children’s mother, which was reason to believe she was responsible for the neglect. She was subsequently arrested.

Sheriff Kevin Turner said his office takes these cases very seriously.

“We approach cases of child neglect with the utmost seriousness, and I will utilize all available resources to ensure the safety and welfare of children in our community,” he said.

According to jail records, Mills is being held in the Madison County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
