President Donald Trump to attend Super Bowl LIX

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) Many A-list stars are often seen at large sporting events, donning their favorite team’s gear and making headlines across the media. But there are very few athletic events that can compare to the magnitude of the Super Bowl.

From Taylor Swift to Bradley Cooper to Beyoncé, the list of celebrities and public figures spans various industries and levels of stardom. However, this list is expanding to new heights this weekend with another big name: President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday morning, less than a week before Super Bowl LIX kicks off in New Orleans, it was announced that the 47th President of the United States is planning to take Air Force 1 to the Big Easy to watch the rivalry rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

While vice presidents including Trump’s former VP, Mike Pence have attended the Super Bowl, it’s nearly unheard of for a president to attend. In 2002, former President H.W. Bush performed the coin flip for Super Bowl XXXVI, which was also hosted by New Orleans.

This isn’t the first time President Trump has made NFL-related headlines specifically, in regards to the Chiefs.

Following the team’s AFC Championship win against the Buffalo Bills last month, Trump posted his well-wishes and congratulations to the team on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs,” Trump wrote. “What a GREAT Team, Coach, Quarterback, and virtually everything else, including those fantastic FANS, that voted for me (MAGA!) in record numbers. Likewise, congratulations to the Buffalo Bills on a tremendous season. They will do a lot of winning long into the future!!!”

The post, although appreciated by many in Chiefs Kingdom, emphasized an awkward silence and a lack of congratulations issued on social media toward the Eagles, who beat the Washington Commanders hours before the Chiefs-Bills rematch.

This has left fans to ask the question, “Is President Donald Trump a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs?”

Although this has not been confirmed or denied by the president himself, he has dropped several breadcrumbs over the years, hinting at his appreciation for the Midwest team.

Specifically, President Trump has congratulated the team, as well as their star players, on other championship wins. This includes a controversial and now revised post on then-Twitter, praising the team for their Super Bowl LIV winning title:

“Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game, and a fantastic comeback, under immense pressure. You represented the Great State of Kansas and, in fact, the entire USA, so very well. Our country is PROUD OF YOU.”

The controversy here? Well, the team is actually based in Kansas City, Missouri, despite many thinking they play across the state line, in Kansas City, Kansas.

Nevertheless, Trump later revised the post to say “State of Missouri” and all was forgiven… -ish.

The latest news, though, only adds to the frenzy of people wondering if the president is not just a fan of football, but a member of Chiefs Kingdom.

The Chiefs play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
