VEBLEN, S.D. (KELO) – A ranch family in Veblen, South Dakota, had a once-in-a-lifetime experience Tuesday night when one of their cows gave birth to quadruplets. The chance of that happening is 1 in 700,000.

What’s even more rare is that they all survived — the odds of that are about 1 in 11.2 million.

“Well Lauren, I don’t know what makes the news these days but we had something pretty remarkable happen last night and so I feel the need to share with you,” Liv Stavick said in a video sent to KELOLAND News. “We had a cow that had quadruplets. Good job, mama.”

A rare feat — quadruplet calves born healthy and alive. But that’s not all.

“These are all bull calves,” Liv Stavick said in the video.

The chance of a cow giving birth to quadruplets of the same gender is 1 in 179.2 million. Those are odds we’d say are pretty newsworthy.

“I’ve yet to talk to anybody who’s had four live calves all the same sex but this cows done a heck of a job with them. Mothered them all right away,” Mike Stavick said in a video sent to affiliate KELO.

“They all are doing very well, we rubbed them all down. Mama did a good job herself, she’s been trying to keep track of them all,” Liv Stavick said in the video. “They’ve all been fed and we are just tickled pink.”

The quadruplets were born at Stavick Simmental just three miles south of Veblen. And to add on to all the excitement, the family tells us tomorrow is their 25th annual bull sale at the ranch.
