Whether it’s the football game, the commercials or the enticing halftime show performance, millions of Americans will stay up late on Sunday.

WASHINGTON — Millions of viewers will tune into Super Bowl 59 on Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs face off in New Orleans.

Whether they come for the game, the fun commercials or the enticing halftime show performance, odds are many Americans will stay up late on Sunday.

And while efforts to make the day after the Super Bowl an official holiday haven’t gone anywhere, those looking for a caffeine boost on Monday are in luck as Starbucks is offering its reward members a free cup of coffee.

Starbucks is giving a free 12. oz – a tall – hot or iced brewed coffee any time on Monday, Feb. 10.

Starbucks Rewards members can apply the “Starbucks Monday” coupon in the app prior to placing their order or they can let the barista know they’re redeeming the coupon when ordering in store or at the drive-thru.

For those who aren’t a Starbucks Rewards member yet, you can sign up for free by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Feb. 9 to get your free coffee coupon.

Those joining Starbucks’ rewards program on Monday can ask the barista about the free coffee, according to the promotion.

Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday?

Ever since the championship game’s inception on Jan. 15, 1967, the Super Bowl has always been played on Sundays.

Naturally, Mondays after the Super Bowl are notorious for the number of employees calling out of work.

In 2024, more than 16.1 million U.S. employees said they planned to miss work on Monday after the Super Bowl. This included over 6 million workers who will risk a penalty for faking their sickness or “ghost” work all together and not show up, according to a survey by the Workforce Institute.

The “Super Bowl Flu” as it’s referred to in the survey, emerges each year after the big game.

One reason the National Football League is adamant about keeping the Super Bowl on Sundays is due to TV ratings, according to past comments from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
