Michigan lawmaker gets sterilized over reproductive health fears

() A Michigan Democratic lawmaker said she had a sterilization procedure because she fears for the future of reproductive health care under President Donald Trump.

Democratic state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, 36, talked about her decision at a protest on the lawn of the Michigan Capitol.

She said she wanted to ensure she would not have to navigate a pregnancy in Trump’s America. She addressed people who are questioning how serious the political landscape is by noting that she, a sitting government official, underwent voluntary sterilization because she feared that contraception would become inaccessible.

The protests are part of a movement that aims to hold 50 protests in 50 states in one day. Signs carried by protesters warned of fascism and coups and criticized not just Trump but Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency.

The protest was one of the largest since Trump took control of the White House for a second term. Pohutsky said those in government need to be doing more to counter Trump’s actions.

She called on elected officials at all levels to stop taking a business-as-usual attitude and called on her colleagues to take action instead of giving into the administration’s goals.
