INDIANAPOLIS Several students and a teacher were injured Thursday at Southport High School when a large glass bottle exploded during a chemistry class demonstration.

According to an email sent to Southport teachers and obtained by affiliate WXIN, the incident occurred just after 12 p.m. in a chemistry lab during a “whoosh bottle demonstration.” The explosion reportedly shattered a “large glass bottle,” Principal Amy Boone wrote to teachers.

The email said the teacher performing the demonstration and multiple students received “minor injuries.” One student will reportedly require stitches, according to the email, while the rest of the injured students either returned to class or were released to a parent.

“We are working on contacting all parents involved, but wanted to let you know because I’m sure many students are talking about it,” the email stated.

WXIN has reviewed a video taken by a student that is being sent around of the explosion and is now working to find out the video’s origins.

The video appears to show a teacher lighting a match and lifting it towards a large glass bottle before the bottle fills with smoke and explodes. Screenshots of the video, with the teacher’s face blurred, can be seen below:

In a statement to WXIN a Southport official said the following:

There was an accident in the chemistry lab at Southport High School. A large glass bottle shattered causing minor injuries to a few students. All students sustaining injuries were promptly attended to by the school nurses and parents/guardians were contacted. Please rest assured that we are reviewing safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
