BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — There was a large law enforcement presence in Brooksville Thursday night following a deputy-involved shooting.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said the incident took place just after 9 p.m.

Deputies said they pulled a driver over for a traffic stop near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Brooksville Avenue. A man then fled from the vehicle, leading to a foot chase, officials reported.

A fight ensued after deputies caught up to the suspect near Ellington Avenue. Early reports from the sheriff’s office indicate that the suspect reached for a deputy’s firearm during the altercation. The deputy then shot the suspect, authorities said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound. No further information was provided regarding his condition.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was notified and will be handling the shooting investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

No further information was immediately available.
