Mattoon man arrested on first-degree murder charge

MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — A Mattoon man admitted to police he struck his mother in the head with a hammer several times, resulting in her death.

On Feb. 7 at 9:04 a.m., Mattoon Police officers were dispatched to the 2900 block of Oak Ave. for an unresponsive individual, department officials posted on Facebook. Upon arrival, officers located a 60-year-old deceased female with blunt force trauma to the head.

Officers then immediately began investigating the incident as a homicide. In the early stages of the investigation, officers identified the victim’s son, Douglas Reed, 31 of a Mattoon, as a person of interest.

At 10:46 a.m., Reed was located in Moultrie County by Mattoon officers. He was interviewed at the Mattoon Police Department and admitted to striking his mother several times in the head with a hammer in the early morning hours of Feb. 7.

Reed indicated that he left the residence after the incident and fled the area in his mother’s vehicle. He was then processed for the offense of first-degree murder and transported to the Coles County Safety and Detention Center.
