AUGUSTA, Ga. () – One local college held an event today to bring the community back together after Hurricane Helene.

Today was the first annual Inaugural Block Party at Georgia Military College. They wanted to bring an event to the community as a place to come together with food, music, crafts, and an auto show.

“A lot of people are left wondering, where is the community,” said Dr. Danielle McKeithen, Senior Department Chair, GMC Augusta. “What can the community do for us? So, we figured a block party has always been rooted in bringing people together. So, we wanted one central place we are your community college here.”

The event was for all ages and included a giveaway, pet adoption, bouncy house, vendors, and more. They not only wanted to give the community something to do but also to connect with people who may want to pursue a degree at the college.

“Just a day of fun and an ability for us to reestablish our presence here in the community. We are a two-year Junior college,” said Director Whitney Lewis, GMC Augusta. “We have a bachelor’s presence online. We’re really big in the high schools as well with dual enrollment. So, we’ve got something for pretty much everybody in the family to come out and take a part of and look into for educational goals and successes.”

The event was filled with attendees excited to connect and support those in the community in this nice weather.

“I’m an advocate educator and have been most of my life and I believe that people should have the opportunity to know the different things that are offered here in the CSRA,” said Kirshana Welcher-Green, an attendee. “So, I came out to support, and I encourage others to come out and support as well so they can know the benefits of being educated and the things going on here in Augusta.”

The event went from 11 am to 4 pm on their Augusta Campus.
