Officer Jeremy Labonte, 24, was killed last night when he was called to investigate a suspicious person.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Police Department has released the identity of the officer killed in the line of duty on Friday night.

The department released his name in a Facebook post on Saturday.

Officer Jeremy Labonte, 24, was killed last night when he was called to investigate a suspicious person. It happened near the 1400 block of Market Boulevard — off Holcomb Bridge Road —  which is the area of a shopping center with multiple businesses, including a Publix, Sky Zone Trampoline Park and Ace Pickleball Club.

Roswell Police said the suspect, later identified as Edward Espinoza, 23, “almost immediately” pulled out a gun shooting the officer, according to authorities. First responders provided aid to the officer, who was taken to the hospital where he died.

Espinoza was taken into custody and was charged with murder and other charges.

According to the department, Officer Labonte joined the department on November 1, 2021.

“He was universally beloved by all who were blessed to know him as a friend, a husband, a son, and a public servant. His absence now leaves a void that could never be filled,” the department said in its statement

Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson held a press conference on Saturday shortly after Roswell Police released his identity.

“Officer Labonte joined the Roswell Police Department on November 1, 2021, driven by a deep and unwavering commitment to public service as a dedicated member of the night shift patrol, he stood side by side. With his de squad brothers and sisters serving with honor, integrity, and an unshakable sense of duty,” the mayor stated in his new conference.

Mayor Wilson further stated Labonte’s loss leaves “a void” in the community’s heart.

“But beyond the badge, Jeremy was a beloved friend, husband, son, and public servant. His loss leaves a void. That cannot be filled,” Wilson said.

Funeral details have not yet been released but will be shared when they are available.

The department added that a memorial vehicle was placed outside the Roswell Police Department on Hill Sheet where the public can pay their respects.
