ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — An Elizabethton man was arrested Thursday after shooting at an occupied garage, investigators say.

According to a release from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), deputies responded to a home on Sims Hill Road regarding a suspect shooting into a garage.

Upon arrival, officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description, later identified by police as Douglas Allen Gibson.

Gibson, 43, reportedly told police he was shooting at a target in the opposite direction of the garage and the shot ricocheted.

“Officers then spoke with the 911 caller, who stated he and his girlfriend were sitting in his garage when they heard gunshots outside,” the CCSO release said. “The man stated he got up to walk outside when a round came through the garage. The man told officers that when he stepped outside the garage, he saw Gibson holding a pistol and Gibson made a threatening comment about the man’s girlfriend.”

Officers also found a bullet hole in the garage door and another in the window of a truck.

After running a criminal history check on Gibson, officers learned he had previously been convicted of a felony.

Gibson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony reckless endangerment and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

As of Friday, Gibson is being held without bond at the Carter County Detention Center pending an arraignment.
