Two children abducted from Alabama earlier this month have been found in Wyoming and their parents arrested.

The 9-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy were given to a family member late in January after the Decatur Police Department said it received a report of child abuse and launched an investigation. But on February 3, the children’s mother, Leanna Varcoe, went to that family member’s home, took the children, and fled.

Two days later, police said they learned that Varcoe may have fled the state and that the children’s stepfather, Zachery Varcoe, may be with them.

Decatur Police secured a warrant for the mother for interference of custody and a child abuse warrant for the stepfather. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued an Emergency Missing Child Alert and sought the public’s help in locating the family.

On February 6, police said they learned all four members of the family were in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Cheyenne Police found the Varcoes’ vehicle at a local hotel, arrested the parents on the outstanding warrants, and took the children into protective custody.

The Varcoes are behind bars in Laramie County awaiting extradition to Alabama.
