Patrick Mahomes' thoughts on Travis Kelce's potential retirement after Super Bowl 2025 loss

Patrick Mahomes didn’t want to speak out of turn about Travis Kelce’s future in the NFL.

While speculation began to swirl about whether Sunday’s Super Bowl 2025 loss would be his last in the league, Mahomes was asked about what was next for his teammate.

“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own, man,” Mahomes said after the Chiefs lost 40-22 to the Eagles. “He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. He always makes plays in the biggest moments, but it’s if he wants to put in that grind because it’s a grind to go out there and play 20 games and get to the Super Bowl.

“He’s done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but I know he still has a love for the game.”

Kelce had a quiet game on Sunday in the Super Bowl loss.

The tight end made four catches on six targets for 39 yards and didn’t record a touchdown.

Kelce briefly spoke with reporters after the game but didn’t address his future.

He did speak on the topic earlier in the week during Super Bowl Opening Night, expressing a hope that he’ll still be playing football next season but acknowledging the future was not entirely clear.

“We’ll see what happens,” Kelce said. “I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal knowing football only lasts for so long. You have to find a way to get into another career and another profession. I’ve been doing that in my offseason.”
