Gabriel Martinelli is set to miss a handful of Premier League games with the hamstring injury he sustained during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The Brazilian limped off midway through the first half and cut a disconsolate figure as he hobbled around the perimeter of St James’ Park.

Arsenal, already trailing from a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, were unable to turn the tie around and instead succumbed to another loss that saw Newcastle emerge as rampant 4-0 winners on aggregate.

The Athletic report that early indications suggest Martinelli will spend at least a month on the treatment table, ruling him out of Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League games against Leicester City, West Ham United and high-flying Nottingham Forest.

There’s also a suggestion that the 23-year-old could miss out on Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United on March 9 and also the visit of London rivals Chelsea a week later, as well as both legs of the Gunners’ last 16 Champions League tie against AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord or Juventus.

It’s another unfortunate injury blow for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who admitted recently that the club had tried but failed to recruit another forward in the January transfer window – a scenario that “disappointed” him.

The Spaniard is already without Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, with the latter ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in the FA Cup third round defeat to Manchester United at the beginning of January.

Candidates to replace Martinelli in the team include teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri and Raheem Sterling, who is yet into any kind of rhythm in north London after joining on loan from Chelsea last summer.
