Police said the girl was struck in the head inside a residence and transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Dalilah Batey.

Ald. Michelle Harris, who represents the 8th Ward, said the incident seems contained to the residence and the community does not appear to be in danger.

“Any time a baby is shot, no matter what the circumstances are, it’s horrific. And it’s horrific for the kids who interact and know that child,” Harris said.

Harris said detectives are working hard to find out how the shooting unfolded.

At this point, whether the 12-year-old girl was the intended target is unclear.

Those who work in the neighborhood were left heartbroken for the girl’s family.

“That’s frightening. I have a 7-year-old granddaughter that we keep a very close eye,” Reeva Arline, who works in the neighborhood, said. “I’m kind of speechless.”

Investigators have not said whether the bullet came from inside or outside the home.

“May God put his hands around her and her family, embrace them and hopefully they get some answers,” Arline said.

Area Two detectives are investigating, and it is not known if anyone was arrested.
