(NEXSTAR) — Pitchers and catchers are reporting to Major League Baseball’s spring training, which means players will soon be donning new uniforms — and no, we aren’t just talking about major off-season signings like Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki.
Last year’s MLB season got off to a scandalous start, at least in the wardrobe department. Nike unveiled its Vapor Premier uniforms after years of development, with the MLB claiming they “received positive feedback from athletes” who wore them during the 2023 All-Star Game.
That seemed to quickly be debunked, especially by those online noting the apparent see-through quality of the uniforms — specifically the pants — during 2024 spring training. Even players expressed some frustration, referring to them as cheap and paper-like.
Other top complaints from players and fans alike highlighted the small jersey font and the sometimes large sweat marks. Regarding the latter, Nike claimed the Vapor Premier uniforms, manufactured by Fanatics, would dry much faster than previous uniforms. That claim garnered heat early on, when portions of the jerseys on some New York Yankees players became notably darker during March games.
The criticism didn’t fall on deaf ears, however. By early May, MLB and Nike announced it would enact changes for the 2025 season. Citing “player and club feedback,” the pair confirmed that lettering would be enlarged and pant customization would be made available.
Nike also said it was “working on a solution to address the slight color differences between the jerseys and the pants” that appeared on some gray road uniforms as well as “the discoloration that can occur due to perspiration in certain instances.” (Adjustments on the gray uniforms were seen later on in the 2024 season.)
Fans will soon see what players may already be encountering: a return of the larger typeface on the back of uniforms. Numbers will also become larger, while sleeve patches will again be embroidered, The Athletic reports.
Players will also find their road gray uniforms will have pre-2024 fabric, with Nike returning to a thicker material introduced by former uniform supplier, Majestic Athletics. White home uniforms will receive that update next season, the league announced in September.
Regardless, some players have already expressed their support for the change.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson gave Nike “kudos” for “doing all they can to get things back to what the players want.”
It’s unclear whether the uniforms you pick up at your team store or other retail outlet will be updated. As The Athletic explains, Nike made authentic Vapor Premier jerseys, a version inspired by the on-field jersey, and a replica available to fans. The company has not, however, commented on what will be available this season.
Another jersey-related change fans will see this season? Players selected for the All-Star Game will get to wear their own jerseys, not a National League or American League-specific uniform as they have in recent years.
Can’t wait for the action? The first Spring Training game is set for Thursday, February 20, when the Chicago Cubs will take on the reigning world champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
