LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The woman arrested in connection with a sports reporter’s death outside New Orleans has an active warrant in Las Vegas and faced similar accusations involving hotel room thefts, according to documents that affiliate KLAS obtained.

Danette Colbert, 48, faces four felony charges as part of the investigation into the death of Telemundo Kansas City journalist Adan Manzano, 27, police said. Police in Kennar, Louisiana, found Manzano’s body inside a hotel room on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Manzano was in Louisiana to cover the Super Bowl. Officers said video shows Colbert and Manzano together about an hour before his death. Afterward, police allege Colbert stole one of Manzano’s credit cards.

“She’s definitely a career criminal,” Police Chief Keith Conley said. “They discovered that a credit card was missing, it was the same credit card that was used to check into the hotel as well as a cell phone.”

Police suspect Manzano may have been drugged before his death.

Colbert faced two criminal cases in Las Vegas in 2022 involving charges of grand larceny and administering a drug to aid in the commission of a felony, records said.

In one case, a man told police he met Colbert at a bar at the Wynn Las Vegas. He said the next morning he woke up to blood all over his face and $100,000 of money and valuables missing.

In that case, Colbert allegedly stole $50,000 in cash, $11,000 in casino chips and other items, including a $30,000 Rolex watch, documents said. Police also obtained video, which they said showed Colbert leaving the room with the man’s bag.

“This brings to light that there are people out there that prey on other people, bring them into their confidence and victimize them,” Conley said about Colbert’s past allegations.

Prosecutors dismissed both cases after Colbert’s alleged victims declined to testify, her attorney told the Associated Press. Records show prosecutors dismissed both cases in October 2022.

That same year, police arrested Colbert on charges of speeding and aggressive driving, records said. She failed to appear for a January 2023 hearing and a judge issued a bench warrant for her arrest. The warrant remained active as of Tuesday and Colbert owed a $305 fine, records said.

It was not immediately clear when Colbert left Las Vegas. Police in Louisiana arrested her Friday, Feb. 7, and identified her as a Louisiana resident.

Police said the department was awaiting toxicology results to determine if Manzano’s death was a homicide and if more charges could be forthcoming.

Manzano lost his wife last year in a car crash and was raising their 2-year-old daughter as a single father, Telemundo Kansas City General Manager Steve Downing told the Associated Press.

Manzano’s family started a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs. As of Tuesday, the GoFundMe had raised nearly $7,000 of its $25,000 goal.
