CHICAGO, Il. (BLOOM) – For Judy Nyberg Pals, 83, and Lowell Pals, 86, love came at an unexpected time, in an unexpected place. Both had lived long and full lives, each experiencing the deep love of a lifelong partner, only to face the heartbreak of losing them. For Judy and Lowell, the idea of falling in love again seemed distant—until it happened.

The couple met at Beacon Hill Senior Living in the Chicago suburbs, where both had moved after their spouses passed away. Judy, an energetic and social resident, quickly embraced life in the community, while Lowell, still grieving the loss of his wife and two golden retrievers, struggled with loneliness. It wasn’t until they began sharing Sunday brunches and playing Wii bowling together that their friendship blossomed into something more.

“I think you don’t go looking for love—it happens to you,” Judy said. “We weren’t searching for someone to love; it was a situation that enveloped us.”

Their connection deepened over time, but it was during a pivotal moment in Lowell’s life that he knew his feelings had grown into something lasting. Facing heart surgery, Lowell realized that his heart wasn’t just healing physically—it was making room for Judy. “I knew then that I wanted her by my side for the rest of my life,” he said.

Their love story led to a heartfelt church wedding, where family members gathered to celebrate their union. Their loved ones embraced their joy, knowing how much they meant to one another. Unlike younger couples who often focus on building a life and personal identity together, Judy and Lowell’s marriage was about companionship, support, and the unwavering commitment to be there for each other.

“Falling in love later in life is completely different,” Judy explained. “It’s about compromise, embracing life as a team, and knowing you will be by each other’s side through all of life’s hurdles.”

Since tying the knot, they have built a life filled with small, meaningful traditions. Though mobility challenges make extensive travel more difficult, they love reminiscing about their adventures from before they met. Together, they’ve also taken cruises to destinations like the Panama Canal, Hawaii, and the Caribbean—creating new memories as husband and wife.

For those who may feel hesitant about finding love later in life, Judy and Lowell offer simple yet profound advice: remain open to companionship, but don’t force it. Love, they believe, has a way of finding you when you least expect it.

Their journey is a testament to the idea that love is not bound by time. No matter the stage of life, the heart has room to heal, to grow, and to embrace new beginnings. For Judy and Lowell, love found them in the most unexpected place—and it turned out to be the most beautiful surprise of all.
