AUGUSTA, Ga. () – This year’s production was titled FAME: Famous African American Female Makers of Excellence.

Renee Toole, Fine Arts Program Coordinator, says they wanted the show to not only be educational but entertaining as well.

“We really feel strongly that African American history is our history as well, it’s not just for February it’s all year long. We’re really proud every time we do it.”  Toole says.

Students of all backgrounds, races and socioeconomic levels were in the show, reflecting the school’s diversity.

Toole describes it as “magic” and says students understand the significance of the performance they are putting on for their family and friends.

She says, “They all appreciate it. Kids who are not African American have an appreciation for it because they love to be in the show, it’s an honor to be in the show, and a privilege.”

Many looked forward to seeing the African dance and ethnic drum ensembles earning the students a standing ovation.

While the show has been around for decades, many alumni show their support by bringing their loved ones. Toole says it’s wonderful to see former students with their children and grandchildren.

“They really look forward to it, just to be able to come back home and to see that this is still a legacy that’s going on.”
