School buses had to be diverted in Brantley County during the fire, which took hours to contain.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. — An eight-acre brush fire took firefighters hours to contain in Brantley County, Georgia Wednesday evening, damaging homes and vehicles in the blaze.

The volunteer Nahunta Fire Rescue Department posted about the fire on their Facebook page Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded to the area of Harrington, Tyson and Couper Roads to calls of a brush fire.

Nahunta Fire Rescue said the wind-driven fire quickly spread to a populated area, damaging or destroying three homes, seven sheds and six vehicles.

The area was closed for several hours, causing traffic – including school buses – to be rerouted.

The 8.36-acre fire was contained Wednesday evening. Several surrounding agencies responded to the blaze, including the Glynn County Fire Department, Georgia Forestry, Brantley County EMS, and volunteer firefighters from Waynesville, Hortense, Hoboken and Calvary.

Nahunta Fire Rescue mentioned in their Facebook post that patients were treated on scene. First Coast News has reached out to the involved agencies to see if anyone was injured in the fire, and this story will be updated when that information comes in.

As of Thursday morning, a cause of the fire has not been released.
