GEORGETOWN, Ill. (WCIA) – Georgetown-Ridge Farm senior Addison Spesard was named the WCIA 3 Athlete of the Week on Thursday.
Spesard racked up a school record 30 rebounds in the Buffaloes’ win against Schlarman on January 30th. The catch is this: She plays point guard.
“Competitiveness, grit, determination, she knows how to go get the ball. She has a knack for the ball,” Georgetown-Ridge Farm head girls’ basketball coach Brad Russell said. “I think she does a great job of being able to read where a shot is going to go. And I think, too, she uses her body well to get position.”
Russell says her leadership and demeanor have made a big impact on the team in conference play.
“She’s been able to show the way for these juniors, sophomores, freshmen,” he said. “It’s her leadership style, her calmness. But it’s also that fierce competitiveness that she has that I think rubs off on everyone else.”
The Buffaloes graduated four seniors after the 2023-24 season. Spesard has stepped up to replace their production and leadership.
“I think I’ve become a lot more confident, especially this year, because last year I’d been playing with the girls all my life,” she said. “So I kind of had to be a little more of a leader on a leader on the court this year.”
Georgetown-Ridge Farm is 13-12 on the season.
Spesard is now eligible for a $1,000 scholarship WCIA will give away to one boy and one girl at the end of the school year.
