This weekend, viewers are in for a treat as a gripping seven-part miniseries hits the screens, available to watch for free without any subscription. The medical comedy-drama, boasting a 96 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, first aired in 2022 and offers a raw glimpse into the NHS in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Following its premiere, the drama garnered numerous nominations, including multiple nods at the BAFTA awards. This Is Going To Hurt is an adaptation of former doctor Adam Kay’s 2017 memoir and stars Ben Whishaw as a fictionalised version of the author, navigating his role as a junior doctor in the obstetrics and gynaecology ward of an NHS hospital.

The series paints a vivid picture of the immense pressures faced by the NHS and its staff, often leading to exhaustion, stress, and sleep deprivation. Through the character of Adam, audiences gain a deeper understanding of how his demanding job impacts both his professional and personal life, with his dark humour adding a binge-worthy and hilarious element to the show, reports Surrey Live.

The cast boasts a stellar line-up, including The Crown’s Alex Jennings, Dame Harriet Walter, Kadiff Kirwan from The Stranger, This Country’s Ashley McGuire, and Michele Austin. British actress Ambika Mod also features prominently as Adam’s mentee and trainee doctor Shruti Acharya.

Esteemed medical professionals, Dr Ranj Singh and Dr Alex George have commended This Is Going to Hurt for its authentic portrayal of the gruelling realities of working within the NHS. The show skillfully balances grim scenarios with quintessentially British humour, leaving audiences both amused and moved.

One Google review highlighted: “This Is Going to Hurt is BBC comedy-drama series starring Ben Whishaw as an NHS doctor in Obstetrics and Gynecology working through the ranks of hospital hierarchy.”

They went on to say, “The series depicts how overworked and under pressure young doctors are, and how much they’re achieving with no experience and with not much clue about what they’re doing.

Adding to the rave reviews, the viewer noted: “The series would make you laugh at one moment with the usual Brit dry humour and make you sad at the next moment with the harsh realities.

“Ben Whishaw excels in his lead performance but the star of the show is Ambika Mod who plays Dr. Shruti Acharya and is splendid in her performance; definitely one actress to look out in the future. Do give it a shot folks. This one is 100% recommended.”

Not only did lead actor Ben Whishaw’s performance garner him a BAFTA TV Award; but his co-star Ambika Mod, who portrayed Dr. Shruti Acharya, was hailed as outstanding, with the promise of a bright future ahead.

When collecting his award for Best Actor, Whishaw, 44, gave a shout-out to Mod, 29, saying: “Ambika Mod, you’re my best actor.”

For Mod, This Is Going to Hurt represented a major breakthrough, showcasing her evocative acting chops as a beleaguered trainee doctor.

Mod’s compelling performance led her to a starring role in Netflix’s One Day, where she played Emma Morley alongside Leo Woodall’s Dexter Mayhew. Her next project will see her take the lead in The Stolen Girl.
