CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Following Illinois’s loss to No. 11 Michigan State, Illini athletic director Josh Whitman took the news conference podium in a rare moment.

Whitman addressed the media and Illini fans after an accident involving Terrence Shannon Jr.’s jersey ceremony. When Shannon unveiled the jersey at halftime, it was upside-down, and he and his family opted to wait for it to be fixed postgame to take photos and celebrate.

“Really regrettable moment,” said Whitman. “It’s a shame that it happened that way…In life, mistakes happen, but there are also certain moments where mistakes can’t happen.”

Shannon was honored after spending two seasons with the Illini, breaking the single-season scoring record and leading Illinois to a Big Ten Championship and an Elite Eight appearance. The honor comes days after Kofi Cockburn’s jersey was honored for his achievements during the 2019-22 seasons.
